ABC officially renews its long-running hit sitcom Modern Family for an eleventh and final season, likely to consist of between 18 and 22 episodes. Created by the duo of Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, Modern Family has been a smash hit since its 2009 debut, premiering to huge ratings and rave reviews. Engaged in perpetual rivalry with CBS’ The Big Bang Theory for the title of highest-rated comedy on TV, Modern Family has remained a strong performer in the near-decade since its launch, even if the reviews aren’t quite as good and the ratings not quite as high now....

The memo starts with a story about a man working on an oil platform in the North Sea. The man decides to risk jumping into the cold waters and try to save himself, rather than stay up, when the platform starts burning. This is a metaphor for Nokia needing to think in a completely different way; rather than allow itself to be swallowed by the competition. The Nokia CEO talks about Apple gaining the high-end market and completely “changing the game”, and about Android’s huge growth and the fact that Google draws most of the industry innovation....

The Wall Street Journal’s tech columnist Walt Mossberg has published an interesting review of the Samsung Series 9 over at the paper’s All Things Digital blog. It’s a stylish, aluminum-clad 13-inch notebook that sports a button-less touchpad, sealed battery and 128GB of flash storage. It’s “a gorgeous” MacBook Air alternative, Mossberg opined, and a showcase of Samsung’s top engineering rather than just a fashion statement. While the Samsung notebook out-specs the Air in several areas, including a newer and faster Intel processor, backlit keyboard, twice the memory and 30 percent brighter screen, it won’t be for everyone due to its price....

Less than a week since being teased at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, the Mac Pro is already finding its way into new and useful places. MacStadium, which currently utlizes the Mac mini for dedicated hosting and colocation, has announced plans to offer Mac Pro hosting later this year. MacStadium has already developed custom racks for the new Mac Pro (via Macworld/TUAW), which features a brand-new design that is much smaller than the previous model, and can store 270 Mac Pros in each Mac Pro POD....

Microsoft has just announced that they are purchasing Nokia’s devices and services divisions. Nokia has been the main manufacturer of Windows Phone 8 devices, and it looks like Microsoft will be using this acquisition to further merge their software and hardware engineering and design. In a joint statement from (outgoing) Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, the two executives stated, “Today’s agreement will accelerate the momentum of Nokia’s devices and services, bringing the world’s most innovative smartphones to more people, while continuing to connect the next billion people with Nokia’s mobile phone portfolio....

Sure, you could argue that Microsoft’s shiny new Office apps for iPad are only ranking so well because they’re freemium apps since they’re listed for free but require a subscription to fully function, but they are taking up the top four spots nonetheless. Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella is apparently pleased with this as he tweeted out “looks like it’s a productive Friday for [iPad] owners!’ following yesterday’s friendly back-and-forth exchange with Apple CEO Tim Cook....

Apple’s easternmost store in the United States is moving to a new and expanded space. On October 12 at 10:00 a.m., South Portland, Maine’s Apple Maine Mall will relocate to the former Abercrombie & Fitch location near the mall’s center. Maine has just one Apple Store, so a larger space for East Coast customers comes not a day too soon. We learned in July that when Abercrombie & Fitch closed at the mall in early 2019, Apple began completely rebuilding the vacant space....

Daniel Radcliffe has officially debunked the rumors that he’s in the running for Marvel’s Moon Knight.
