Made in Abyss is a series about an orphan girl named Riko who scavenges the rim of a colossal pit, the Abyss, around which her city has been built. The Abyss holds incredible treasures from bygone ages as well as titanic and deadly monsters. The farther one travels down into the pit, the more dangerous it becomes - and the worse the effects become when ascending back to the surface. Shortly after discovering a strange, robotic boy in the pit, Riko receives a message from the depths of the pit from her mother, an explorer long thought to have perished in an attempt to reach the bottom of the pit. The message asks for Riko to make the journey down to the bottom herself, a journey from which she’ll never be able to return. Accompanied by the robot boy Reg, she begins her expedition into the mysterious Abyss.
The new trailer, released during Crunchyroll’s Anime Awards, revealed a chilling English voice laid over footage of a number of the ferocious beasts Riko and Reg encounter as they struggle to reach the bottom of the Abyss. Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn is a compilation film made using footage from the first half of the anime series. Such movie adaptations are designed to stand on their own so as to be more inviting to newcomers to the material.
Both Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn and Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight released in Japan on January 4 and January 18, respectively. However, the upcoming US theatrical release for Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn marks the first time the film will be available in the west. The movie will receive two theatrical screenings, one on March 20 with Japanese audio and English subtitles and the other on March 25 with English audio.
Made in Abyss really earned the accolades it received for its 2017 run. The story presents hard questions and brutal answers while keeping the viewer engaged in the tribulations faced by Riko and Reg. It paints a fascinating fantasy world tinged with almost Lovecraftian weirdness. Perhaps one of its biggest selling points is the art direction of Osamu Masayama who comes from a long career animating and overseeing animation at Studio Ghibli. His work helps to elevate the animation and artistic style of the series to cinematic heights. This works nicely with the skills of Masayuki Kojima, best known for his previous directorial role in creating the acclaimed Monster anime series.
