Will there be a Made in Abyss season 2? The anime, which is based on the manga of the same name by Akihito Tsukushi, aired its thirteen-episode first season in 2017. Since then, updates on the prospect of a sophomore outing have been few and far between. Made in Abyss follows an orphaned girl named Riko who longs to be a “Delver” like her mother. Delvers are adventurers who explore the titular abyss - a huge system of pits and caves - to unravel the mysteries within.
The abyss holds untold treasures and unbelievable creatures, but of course, the journey is not an easy one. Together, Riko and her pal, a robot boy named Reg, descend into the cave system in search of answers. Adapted by Kinema Citrus, Made in Abyss was directed by Masayuki Kojima, written by Hideyuki Kurata and featured character designs by Kazuchika Kise. The show has also been likened to the work of Hayao Miyazaki, which makes sense considering art director Osamu Masuyama used to work for Studio Ghibli.
Fans are eagerly awaiting Made In Abyss season 2, but is actually going to happen?
Made in Abyss Season 2 Release Date
So, will Made in Abyss return for season 2? Despite the popularity and critical acclaim of the series, viewers are still waiting for news of a second season. Unfortunately, as of right now, there’s no official word on the subject. The show won Anime of the Year at Crunchyroll’s 2017 Anime Awards and its success certainly makes a second season seem likely. Though news of a sequel was announced last year, it’s not taking the form many fans had in mind. Whether there are more seasons remains to be seen, but for the time being, the show’s future seems to be based on its big-screen prospects instead.
Made in Abyss Received Two Compilation Films
Two compilation films adapting the original anime, Journey’s Dawn and Wandering Twilight, premiered in Japan back in January, with a U.S. release following in March. An official sequel was announced as well, so the series will continue, just perhaps not in the way viewers were expecting. The movie, which will be called Dawn of the Deep Soul, is set to release on January 2020 in Japan and will probably arrive in the U.S. a few months later. With the focus on a sequel film, it seems unlikely production on Made In Abyss season 2 would start any time before late 2020 or early 2021.
It might seem strange to release two compilation films rather than new material, but the one minor complaint leveled at Made in Abyss was its pacing. The movies aimed to solve that problem, though the jury is out on whether or not they were entirely successful.
