Magic: The Gathering’s War of the Spark Mythic Edition releases this Wednesday, May 1, and will retail for $249.99 on eBay with limited availability. The latest iteration of a long-running collectible set, War of the Spark’s Mythic Edition follows a trend that has seen Magic creator Wizards of the Coast blend a premium offering of old and new cards with unique artwork and foiling.

Magic: The Gathering card prices have always been mind-boggling, but the last few years have seen the game grow as a collector pursuit, which has in turn caused the financial side of the game to boom as well. The legendary Black Lotus Magic: The Gathering card can fetch as high as triple digits at auction, while older versions of cards that can never be reprinted continue to rise in price as collector’s look to finish their sets. While Mythic Editions are nowhere near the scarcity level of Magic’s most sought-after cards, they are still limited edition products that can often be sold for twice what consumers paid for them within days of acquiring the item.

Magic: The Gathering’s War of the Spark Mythic Edition will continue that trend, as just one of the premium planeswalker cards available in the set is already worth over $100 USD, with most secondary market sellers placing it closer to $150. Alongside the expensive Jace, the Mind Sculptor, seven other planeswalkers will be up for grabs when the set goes on sale at 12:00pm PST here. The collector’s edition product will be limited to two per customer and will likely sell out within minutes of going live on eBay, where the product will be available exclusively. eBay is also offering 50% off international shipping for the product to help ease cost for potential buyers.

That’s a nice gesture from the company, but Wizards of the Coast definitely didn’t need the help on this one. Magic: The Gathering’s War of the Spark Mythic Edition collector’s set will have no trouble selling out on its own, as Mythic Editions are simply one of the most desirable collector’s items available whenever they are released. A combination of unique artwork and scarcity makes demand for them much higher than their availability, and between collectors who want them and resellers who know they can make a quick profit off of them, War of the Spark Mythic Editions will be gone in the blink of an eye.

Magic: The Gathering’s War of the Spark Mythic Edition is yet another way Wizards of the Coast is capitalizing on the game’s resurgent popularity. With the success of Magic Arena esports and a thriving Standard format to keep pushing sales of new packs, Magic: The Gathering might be in the healthiest place it has ever been over its twenty-year-plus history. Given that, it won’t be at all surprising if we begin to see more premium products like the War of the Spark Mythic Edition rolled out with greater frequency, as the market for collectible versions of Magic cards only continues to grow to match its burgeoning playerbase.
