iOS 6’s redesigned App Store has leaked a major forthcoming update to Twitter’s official iPhone application in its update history section. Twitter, in recent months, has come under fire due to potential new changes to its mobile application API and the lack of power-user features in its official mobile device apps. It appears that this controversy may change in the coming days, as leaked release notes show some impressive new changes. Twitter for iPhone 4.3 is incoming and it brings several new features focusing on interactivity, enhanced notifications, searching, performance, and more. You can find all of the new features – summarized from Twitter’s release notes – after the break:
- More interactive Tweet view experience: content previews, videos, images and more will now be shown within tweets containing links to “partner websites.”
- Tweets about “selected events” will now be highlighted. Twitter will curate the relevant tweets and images
- In the Connect tab, autocomplete improvements will be now be present. Twitter rolled out something similar to their official website last week.
- Major push notifications enhancement: You will now be able to choose to receive push notifications when certain people tweet
- Like in Tweetbot, you will now be able to receive unobtrusive Twitter notifications while you are using the app.
- The Discover tab will now be able to alert users when new content is ready for perusal
- Personalized Trends
- You will now be able to tap a user’s avatar to be taken to their profile page
- Improved performance
- You will now be able to manually input your password when having authentication issues
- Hungarian localization
- Finally: the new Twitter logo will be featured on the icon (our image below is from iOS 6 Twitter integration)
- Also promised is a slew of other tweaks, more polish, and bug fixes
Obviously, the leaking of these release notes through the App Store is a major iOS 6 bug that Apple will likely fix. A similar leak was reported to us prior to the last Instagram update launch. The time between the release notes being posted in the App Store and the update’s launch was ten days, but we are not sure when this new Twitter update will launch. In addition, The Next Web reported that an upcoming Twitter for iPhone update may drop the Twitter client labeling, and the report raises questions about how this connects to third-party clients. In any case, it might just be time to get excited about Twitter’s official iPhone client (again). Thanks, Matt! Screenshots from the iOS 6 App Store :
