As one would expect, a large percentage of Marvel fans planning to watch Avengers: Endgame are shocked when people leave an MCU movie before the credits conclude, according to a recent statistic. End-credit scenes are a staple in Marvel films, serving to either tease a future story, or provide comedic relief.

Although post-credit scenes existed before the MCU, one could argue that the Marvel films have popularized it. It all started in 2008 with the release of Iron Man. After the credits, Nick Fury appeared and uttered the famous sentence, “I’m here to talk to you about the Avenger initiative.” From there, end-credit scenes served as a way to build anticipation for the gathering of the Avengers. Iron Man 2 showed Thor’s hammer, and the end of Captain America: The First Avenger bridged to 2012’s team epic. From there, post-credit scenes featured exciting developments, such as the arrival of Thanos, and comedy, such as the Captain America video at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming. To build even more anticipation for Endgame, Marvel has officially released every post-credits scene online.

According to Fandango (via Deadline), 79% of fans are mystified when people leave a Marvel movie when the credits roll. Another statistic from the data says that 97% of fans consistently stay for post-credits scenes. A few other statistics include the percentage of fans attempting to evade spoilers, those who have turned off social media temporarily to avoid being spoiled, and those who consider the release of Avengers: Endgame to be a “historic moment” in the world of movies.

With Endgame already earning over $120 million in ticket presales, it’s already a cinematic event. It wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that most people watching are those who have been watching since Iron Man. If 97% stick around post-credits, it is understandable they would be astonished that there are viewers who do not consistently watch the movies until the very end.

While it is surprising that there are still viewers who would leave an MCU movie right when the credits hit, it’s a bit more understandable for the general audience. A film’s credits typically symbolize the end of the story. If someone only watches these films casually, and doesn’t pay attention to social media, it’s possible that some simply are not aware of bonus scenes. Plus, in today’s busy world, some may feel that sitting through a long credits sequence is tedious. Either way, Marvel fans will always be there to give their casual viewer friends the detailed description of the scenes.
