Newly surfaced concept art from Thor: The Dark World makes Malekith look a lot like Ultron from Avengers: Age of Ultron. Thor: The Dark World was Thor’s second solo outing, while Age of Ultron was the second team up film featuring the original six heroes Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Thor.
Malekith the Accursed is a well-known enemy of Thor, who first appeared in Marvel comics in Thor #344 in 1984. The character is most known for being the leader of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim. The character was portrayed by Doctor Who actor Christopher Eccleston, who has had some harsh words about his villanious role. Ultron on the other hand, debuted a bit earlier in 1968 and was often an enemy of the Avengers. Ultron was voiced by James Spader and created by Tony Stark in the film. The two villains don’t really have anything in common, but new concept art shows that Malekith almost resembled Ultron.
Posting on Facebook, Charlie Wen shared a piece of his concept art that he created for Thor: The Dark World. Wen shared his concept art next to an image of one of Malekith’s first appearances, but fans will also notice that Malekith also looks a lot like Ultron. This is mainly do to the metallic look of this version of Melekith, the straight mouth, and the facial markings on the character. Wen’s original Facebook post can be viewed below.
While this version of Melekith looks simmilar to Ultron, this art also looks much more comic accurate than what made it into the final cut of Thor: The Dark World. The film’s version of Malekith has a simmilar chest emblem and eventually half of Malekith’s face is burned, but other than that, Thor: The Dark World’s version of Malekith was very different from the comics. Wen’s version however remains much more faithful, including Malekith’s signature, long, flowing hair, as well as his black and red color scheme.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe always seemed to have a villain problem, and Malekith was one of the reasons behind Thor: The Dark World’s poor reception. Even though this concept art makes Malekith look very simmilar to the MCU’s version of Ultron, there is no reason to think that these two characters share any type of connection in the films. The main reason why they probably look simmilar is because Wen worked in the art department for both Thor: The Dark World and Avengers: Age of Ultron. This simmilarity is nothing more than a fun observation, but it makes you wonder if this design could have helped the critical reception of Thor: The Dark World.
