When Man of Steel kickstarted the DCEU back in 2013, it looked like the start of a promising future. However, many fans were shocked that it took Warner Bros. and DC as long as it did to announce development on Man of Steel 2, with the studio just confirming that the sequel was in the works last year.

Luckily, it looks as though some traction on the Man of Steel sequel may finally be underway, following reports last month that Kingsman: The Secret Service director Matthew Vaughn was in talks with the studio to direct the project. Now, it looks like Man of Steel 2 may have transformed into not only being another Superman standalone film, but also a backdoor introduction to one of the DCEU’s most-anticipated new arrivals.

The news comes thanks to a new Reddit user claiming to have inside information from the DC creative team. The post claims that Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam will be the main villain in Man of Steel 2, after DC played with the idea of having him make a brief appearance in the sequel originally. But the post says that DC felt Johnson deserved a bigger role than just a cameo appearance and that the Shazam! movie that was announced originally is “practically off the table at this point,” though fans can expect to see Billy Batson in a film sometime down the line. The user also suggests that Vaughn is still talking to Warners about directing Man of Steel 2, but the studio is looking at other filmmakers as well, possibly to try and pressure Vaughn into making a decision.

Now, make sure to take all of this with a grain of salt for the time being. Not only does this come from an unnamed source, but it also goes directly against recent reports regarding the Shazam! film, which just back in February, was reportedly looking at Lights Out! director David F. Sandberg to direct it. Additionally, others have taken to social media to claim that these reports are wholly inaccurate, saying there’s a strong chance Brainiac will end up being the villain in the Man of Steel sequel.

So while this only seems like a minor possibility at this point, it’s still an interesting one to consider. After all, many fans had speculated that Cavill’s Superman would appear at some point in the Shazam! film anyways, after his many documented battles with both Black Adam and Shazam in the comics throughout the years. Whether or not that led DC to making Black Adam the villain in Man of Steel 2 will have to wait to be seen, but even if he isn’t, the idea of getting to see Cavill and Johnson throw down in a superpowered battle onscreen together is an exciting one. Even if it might be nothing more than a crazy fantasy at this point.
