WARNING: There are SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ahead.
The Mandalorian actor Jake Cannavale slams Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, saying it’s the worst film in the Star Wars franchise. Directed by J.J. Abrams, The Rise of Skywalker is the final chapter of Disney and Lucasfilm’s sequel trilogy that launched in 2015 with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Much has been said about each entry of the sequel trilogy, which additionally includes Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, with each movie receiving both criticism and praise for various aspects. In the case of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker reviews, critics haven’t been impressed, with the film holding a 58 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Conversely, Abrams’ movie has a positive 86 percent audience score as of this writing.
For his part, Cannavale debuted in The Mandalorian “Chapter 5: The Gunslinger” as wannabe bounty hunter guild member Toro Calican, who hires the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) to help track down wanted assassin Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen). Calican has only appeared in the one episode, but Cannavale is decidedly now part of the Star Wars universe, and he shared his thoughts on the latest film installment of the series, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
On his Instagram stories, Cannavale revealed he saw Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker last night and “woke up still mad.” He prefaced his thoughts on the movie by writing, “I’m in the Star Wars universe now!!! Cannavale also answered a question from a fan asking if he’d be as angry about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker if he’d been involved in the movie directly, rather than in another part of the larger universe. See Cannavale’s response and a screenshot of it below:
As can already be seen in their Rotten Tomatoes scores, The Rise of Skywalker and The Last Jedi are both divisive - but for different reasons. Whereas The Last Jedi challenged viewers and subverted the expectations of fans, The Rise of Skywalker seemingly tried to give fans exactly what they want. Abrams’ latest Star Wars movie was also tasked with wrapping up not only the sequel trilogy but the entire Skywalker saga as a whole in a compelling manner and, in the case of those sharing Cannavale’s sentiments, it fails to do so.
Honestly, I think I’d be more mad. Obviously I can’t speak on behalf of the cast. To some actors this is just a job and maybe they’re just happy to be working. To which I say more power to them. Also, maybe they f-cking loved the new Star Wars! In which case that’s f-cking dope that they got to work on something they truly got to enjoy. Personally, I’ve been a huge Star Wars fan since I was a kid. And I felt pretty let down by the overall laziness of this new trilogy, and also a bit angry at the entitlement of it for pretty much seizing control of the franchise as a whole by basically [saying] “Nah we don’t like the ending that everybody’s been cool with for decades, let’s change it!” I personally would feel pretty depressed if I was in the new Star Wars movie (as a main character I mean. If I was a dude wearing an alien puppet or whatever I’d be f-cking stoked…but still.)
Contrarily, there are those who enjoy The Rise of Skywalker and feel it concludes the sequel trilogy and the Skywalker saga on a high note. Though Cannavale’s opinion is interesting considering he’s a part of the larger Star Wars universe - and he offers his honest take on the movie - he’s also a fan just like everyone else. And this particular fan didn’t like Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
