If a recent tweet by series creator Jon Favreau is any indication, The Mandalorian season 2 will feature the return of Jabba the Hutt’s guards, the Gamorreans. With the final episode of The Mandalorian’s first season now available to watch, fans will surely be speculating on what new adventures are in store for both The Mandalorian himself and his child companion, the unknown creature which the internet has dubbed Baby Yoda, until season 2 of The Mandalorian arrives in Fall 2020.
As a launch title for the Disney+ video streaming service, The Mandalorian found both fan and critical acclaim by returning the Star Wars franchise to its samurai and Western-inspired roots. Although Star Wars recently concluded its theatrical nine-film-long Skywalker Saga with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, it appears the universe, characters, and elements of Star Wars both old and new aren’t going away any time soon, at least not on the small screen.
When Jon Favreau announced the release date for The Mandalorian season 2 on Twitter, he also shared an image of a Gamorrean, one of the pig-nosed aliens who served as guards to Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi. Although the characters were featured in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and various canon books, video games, and comics, a live-action Gamorrean has not been seen on screen since 1983.
Gamorreans are said to be of low intelligence, which makes them both stubborn and loyal servants. Their homeworld, according to Fandom, is the planet of Gamorr, is located in the Outer Rim Territories, although the creatures are often found on other planets serving as bodyguards or mercenaries. Whether or not season 2 of The Mandalorian will feature the show’s primary duo facing off against a crime boss like Jabba the Hutt remains to be seen, but given everything known about The Mandalorian so far and the way the show likes to include different alien species it’s quite likely this will end up being either a new temporary companion or an enemy.
The Mandalorian has fearlessly embraced the complete history of Star Wars in a way which even the recent film sequels have been unable to do. From including elements of not only the original trilogy, but also the series’ long list of books, animated shows, and prequels, The Mandalorian feels to many like a complete Star Wars experience unlike any other, and those fans will surely be intrigued to find out what Jon Favreau has planned for The Mandalorian’s second season.
