Michael B. Jordan and actress Margot Robbie join Christian Bale in David O. Russell’s new film. A director, screenwriter, and producer, Russell has directed a number of films over the years. His first, Spanking the Monkey, was released in 1994. The independent feature centered around an incestuous relationship between a mother and son. Since then, he’s maintained a diverse output in terms of genres. Russell has collaborated with Ben Stiller on a comedy, he’s helmed the satirical look at the Gulf War (Three Kings), and he’s directed Oscar-winning dramatic performances from the likes of Jennifer Lawrence and Melissa Leo. Some of his most famous films include American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook, and The Fighter.

For his latest project, his first since 2015’s biopic Joy, Russell is reuniting with a frequent collaborator in Bale and adding a new star to his roster of performers. Two of the busiest and most recognizable actors working today, Bale and Robbie are known equally for their performances in comic book adaptations and a slew of other notable films. Last year, Bale headlined Ford v Ferrari and earned several awards nominations for his portrayal of professional race car driver Ken Miles. Robbie, currently leading Birds of Prey, had an even busier 2019. She had prominent supporting roles in Bombshell and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. For this new year, it appears as if neither actor has an any intention of slowing down.

Now, Deadline is reporting that Robbie has joined Bale in Russell’s new film, which is currently in the works at Regency. Plot details are currently unknown, but it’s noted the project is based on an original idea from Russell. This would be the second time that Robbie and Bale have appeared in the same movie. However, given that Robbie’s part in The Big Short amounts to a quick cameo where she plays herself, they did not share any scenes. Bale, of course, has starred in two of Russell’s projects: American Hustle and The Fighter, for which he won an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category in 2010. THR further reports that Jordan has also joined the cast of the project.

The untitled Russell film is just one of the projects that Bale and Robbie have lined up. Bale will appear in Thor: Love & Thunder, with some specifics about his character already possibly revealed. As for Robbie, her high-profile gigs include reprising the role of Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad sequel. She’s also announced to portray the iconic Barbie in a live-action film directed by Greta Gerwig and co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.

For those hoping to speculate about what Russell’s film will be about, and what roles his actors might play, a glimpse at his filmography will be of limited hope. He’s dabbled with many different themes and ideas over the years. But one constant, even among his detractors, is that he tends to get memorable performances from the stars he works with.
