Margot Robbie still wants to make a Harley Quinn Gotham City Sirens movie after Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). One of four Harley Quinn DCEU films Warner Bros. put in development after Suicide Squad, Gotham City Sirens would see Robbie’s Harley Quinn team up with her fellow antiheroines Catwoman and Poison Ivy to fight bad guys on the streets of Gotham. Suicide Squad helmsman David Ayer remains loosely attached to direct the spinoff, with Geneva Dworet-Robertson (Tomb Raider, Captain Marvel) writing the script. However, the project’s been on hold since WB decided to make Birds of Prey first.

In spite of his experience making Suicide Squad (which went through heavy studio-mandated reshoots), Ayer says he’s proud of his previous work on the DCEU and seems to be interested in returning to the franchise. He’s currently working on a re-imagining of The Dirty Dozen for WB, so he clearly doesn’t hold any grudges against the studio, either. Robbie, for her part, is similarly committed to playing Harley Quinn again after Birds of Prey, be that in the form of Gotham City Sirens or not.

During Screen Rant’s interview with her for Birds of Prey, Robbie said she “definitely would be interested to pursue” Gotham City Sirens as a followup to her latest DCEU film and would “love” to explore Harley’s relationship with Catwoman and Poison Ivy onscreen. Keeping that in mind, she also admitted “I don’t know where the studios stand on what they want to do next” with Harley Quinn, be it Birds of Prey 2, Gotham City Sirens, or something else.

Strictly speaking, Gotham City Sirens wouldn’t have to function as a sequel to Birds of Prey; it could alternatively exist as its own thing or a loose spinoff, similar to Birds of Prey’s relationship with Suicide Squad. Robbie also talked about that during our interview with her, noting the DCEU’s current standalone movie approach means “like the comics, a lot of these films can exist on their own” and feature the same characters, yet operate “under a different director’s vision”. Depending on Ayer’s schedule, it wouldn’t have to be him calling the shots, either, much like he ultimately passed on Suicide Squad 2 and was replaced by James Gunn. That being said, Robbie has always seemed interested in collaborating with Ayer again, so his return on Gotham City Sirens is certainly possible.

Most of the early Birds of Prey reviews say the film leaves you wanting to see more of Harley’s teammates (Huntress, Black Canary, Renee Montoya), so WB will presumably want to tap into that demand with future sequels and spinoffs. If so, the studio may be all the less inclined to return to Ayer’s version of Gotham City Sirens. Birds of Prey 2 could even bring Poison Ivy into the mix, allowing the DCEU to finally adapt her friendship/romance with Harley in live-action. Elsewhere, Matt Reeves’ The Batman will introduce Catwoman to the DCEU in 2021, with Zoë Kravitz bringing the iconic antiheroine to life. Point being, if Gotham City Sirens doesn’t happen, there are plenty of other ways for all three Sirens to play key roles in the DCEU moving forward.
