It’s been three years to the day since the tragic death of Carrie Fisher, and Star Wars co-star and lifelong friend Mark Hamill is remembering her in his own unique way. Carrie Fisher touched the hearts and minds of millions across the globe with her work, inspiring so many with outspoken candor and intelligence.

Carrie Fisher rose to prominence in the late 1970’s for her performance as Princess Leia Organa in Star Wars. At the time of film’s release, Fisher was just 21 years old and had just a few acting credits to her name. After the release of Star Wars, Fisher went on to co-star in the film’s two sequels The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as the oft-forgotten Star Wars Holiday Special. In the years that followed the release of Return of the Jedi, Fisher starred in many more roles for television and film. In 2012, Disney bought Star Wars from Lucasfilm and immediately announced plans to make more movies for the franchise. Shortly after the purchase, it was announced that Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill would all be reprising their original roles for the film. Sadly, Carrie Fisher passed away before the release of the second film in the new trilogy, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films) has taken to Twitter to remember Carrie Fisher on the three-year anniversary of her death. In the post, Hamill writes “#CarrieOnForver” which serves to say that Carrie’s enduring legacy continues on. Hamill also posted a series of images which have pertinent meaning to the memorial. The first is a credits line which says “In Loving Memory of our Princess Carrie Fisher” from the film’s ending crawl. That’s followed up by some pictures of Fisher from the movies with the quote, “No one’s ever really gone” in reference to Luke’s last lines to Leia. The last photo is that of Luke and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) laying down their medals from the original Star Wars at the grave of Leia while she watches happily from beyond.

Hamill’s post received enormous positive feedback, with many commenters lauding the actor’s vulnerability. Although Carrie Fisher passed away before the dedicated filming of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, director J.J. Abrams brought back Leia by utilizing unused footage from the previous films combined with CGI.

It’s great to see Carrie Fisher honored in such a celebratory way. Fans of her work have long pointed to her courage and unflinching, enduring spirit as things far and away more important than her acting. For her work as an activist, writer, comedian, and yes, Star Wars’ Princess Leia, Fisher will always be remembered as a titan of her industry.
