Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Mark Ruffalo is still eagerly waiting for Hulk’s rematch against Thanos. Josh Brolin’s big MCU villain made his official debut in Avengers: Infinity War with a strong first sequence. The 2018 film opened with the Mad Titan and his minions attacked the Asgardian refugee ship, killing half of the people onboard, as well as Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Heimdall (Idris Elba). But it was when he easily defeated the green-raging monster in a hand-to-hand combat that fans first got an idea of just how powerful he was.
The Hulk survived the whole ordeal, partially thanks to Heimdall using his remaining might to send him back to Earth. Crashing in the Sanctum Sanctorum, Bruce Banner played the part of a herald - informing his allies of Thanos’ imminent arrival. However, beyond that, he wasn’t much of a help anymore as he repeatedly failed to transform back into the Hulk who would’ve been more useful during the debacle. It wasn’t until Endgame when fans would see the green-rage monster again, but this time, with the consciousness of his human alter-ego.
Smart Hulk proved to be more useful in Endgame - wielding the completed Infinity Gauntlet and enacting the snap to bring back all who turned to dust after Thanos’ decimation. Amidst this, Ruffalo admits that he still would’ve wanted to do more in the film while on stage at the C2E2 in Chicago last weekend (via Comicbook), and he’s still hoping for his character to get another crack at Thanos.
There was so much hype for a Hulk-Thanos rematch coming in to Endgame, thanks to a couple of marketing merchandise teasing about it going down. However, film co-writer Stephen McFeely explained that they opted against another brawl between the two characters so as not to contradict the Hulk’s intellectual development. While the initial green-rage monster would be all for a brutal fight, the new smart version of the character would be more pragmatic about the situation. That kind of makes sense, still, it would’ve been cool to see Hulk getting another chance at beating the Mad Titan.
“I always think you can do more. There’s a lot of characters and everyone had to have their moment. And there’s a lot of new people. I’m waiting for a rematch.”
Like Ruffalo, many fans are still pining for a Hulk-Thanos rematch in Avengers: Endgame; forget that the Thanos is supposedly dead now after Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) sacrificing his own life to defeat him and his minions once and for all. With the idea of time travel, as well as multiverse in the MCU, there are several ways to make this happen - that’s if Marvel Studios wants it. On that note, it’s worth noting, however, that the future of Smart Hulk in the franchise is still unknown. As one of the remaining founding heroes of the Avengers, there’s not much update with regard to what lies ahead for him. Although, the actor has recently revealed that he’s in early talks to reprise the role in the upcoming Disney+ series, She-Hulk
