Martin Scorsese’s daughter, Francesca, trolls her father with some Marvel-themed wrapping paper. The controversy that began when the legendary director shared his view that superhero movies were not cinema went on for months, seeming to come to an end when Scorsese penned an op-ed for The New York Times in which he explained his criticism with close to 1,500 words. Although not everyone would agree with the points made by the Academy Award winner, no one could argue that Scorsese hadn’t arrived at his opinion earnestly and thoughtfully. And, by that point, many notable names within the entertainment industry had already picked sides in the debate.
Stars associated with the Marvel Cinematic Universe disagreed with Scorsese, albeit not all of them shared the same level of vehemence in their defense. While Sebastian Stan and Karen Gillan argued for the artistic merit of their work, others more closely linked to the dominant comic book franchise were more muted in their responses to the controversy. That includes Robert Downey Jr. and Kevin Feige, both of whom potentially wanting to stay above the fray. One person who knows Scorsese quite well has bided her time, waiting for the right moment to present the best possible retort to this whole superhero brouhaha.
That would be Scorsese’s daughter, Francesca. An actress in her own right, the younger Scorsese has appeared in a number of shorts. She’s also had bit parts in some of her father’s films, including The Aviator and The Departed. Currently, Francesca Scorsese is filming the upcoming miniseries We Are Who We Are. As captured by Chris Quinn, in a tweet which has gone viral, the actress shared in an Instagram story about how she trolled her father by getting him gifts covered in Marvel-themed wrapping paper. Although The Irishman director could’ve enjoyed tearing up Iron Man, Hulk, and Captain America.
It may turn out, down the line, that Scorsese ignited a conversation worth having. Between those who disagreed with him, those who agree like Terry Gilliam, and those who wondered if it was a marketing ploy, Scorsese opened the door to several worthwhile considerations: What types of art qualify for serious evaluation and why are superhero movies so often dismissed from that category? On the other hand, what are the negative results of a genre which so thoroughly conquering pop culture across the world?
Some of those questions have always been, and will continue to be asked. Others will take years to fully answer. For Francesca Scorsese though, she’s managed to take the Marvel scuffle and use it to hopefully make a loved one smile during the holidays. That’s what matters most.
