The physiques of Marvel’s cinematic heroes were put on blast by Ricky Gervais, as the actor/comedian insulted them during his hosting duties at the 2020 Golden Globes Awards. Despite his fair share of controversial comments at previous Golden Globes ceremonies, and even recent “transphobic” jokes. It seemed like nothing was going to stop Gervais from hosting the award ceremony for a fifth, and according to the actor, final time in 2020. The co-creator of The Office was once again in charge of hosting, and he proved his point yet again, that he does not “care anymore” because none of Hollywood’s elite were safe from his ruthless brand of humor.

In previous ceremonies, Gervais has gone after the likes of Johnny Depp, insulting his film The Tourist, and even aimed jokes at Mel Gibson’s troubled past. However, this year, Gervais targeted one of 2019’s popular topics, Marvel. A few months ago, The Irishman director Martin Scorsese said that he does not believe Marvel films are “cinema.” This past Sunday, during his opening speech at the Golden Globes ceremony, in typical Gervais fashion, the host gave us his thoughts on what he believes Marvel films are, and what the actors are required to do.

With the written quotes coming from Digital Spy, during his opening speech, Gervais claimed that all the “best actors” have now gone to Netflix and HBO, while the actors that still do “Hollywood movies now do fantasy-adventure nonsense.” He joked about them wearing “masks and capes, and really tight costumes,” and said: “Their job isn’t acting anymore. It’s going to the gym twice a day and taking steroids! Have we got an award for most-ripped junkie?”

Marvel does indeed have a long list of actors who have transformed their physiques. Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and more recently, Kumail Nanjiani have all gone about transforming their bodies for their respective Marvel roles. The jokes directed toward the MCU’s heroes are expectedly brutal, as that’s true to Gervais’ style of humor, and considering his opinions on these “fantasy-adventure” films, he unsurprisingly agreed with Scorsese’s comments about Marvel as well.

Considering it’s his last time hosting the award ceremony, the After Life actor almost had to take a jab at the current box office kings Marvel, by tearing down their style of films. Whether people enjoy Gervais’ edgy jokes or not, he seems to always leave people talking about him and the Golden Globes, and that’s likely the reason he has returned to host the award ceremony five times. These comments will most likely be brought up in interviews with Marvel stars in the future too, but considering the self-deprecating jokes a lot of actors like Hemsworth and Nanjiani make, they shouldn’t react too negatively to Gervais’ comments.
