The MCU’s Falcon (Anthony Mackie) is getting his first-ever comic book accurate costume in Marvel TV series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Sam Wilson is expected to succeed Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) as the next Star-Spangled Avenger. At the end of the movie, old Steve chose Falcon to be the new Captain America and handed off the shield to his former partner.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the first of several new Marvel shows coming to Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+. Scheduled for a late 2020 release, the series teams Falcon with Bucky (Sebastian Stan) in a story that will incorporate two more Captain America characters, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, and Daniel Bruhl as Baron Zemo, who this time will have his iconic purple mask. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will also introduce comic book anti-hero U.S. Agent, played by Wyatt Russell.
The launch of Disney+ included the Marvel special, “Expanding the Universe”, which featured concept art and images of characters from Marvel’s new Disney+ shows. One of these images provided a close look at Falcon’s new costume. The costume has a red, white, and gray color scheme. Red and white are the colors for many of Falcon’s classic costumes in Marvel Comics. Though it may be a combination of multiple versions, the colors and design of the suit closely resemble the costume worn by Sam Wilson in the early and mid-2000s.
Up until now, Falcon hasn’t looked much like his comic counterpart. The MCU’s take on the character has Sam Wilson wearing a military-designed, weaponized suit with wings, whereas what the comic book hero wore was more of a costume than a weapon. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is transforming Sam Wilson into a much more recognizable version of the hero. Now that he has his red and white outfit, the only thing missing is his pet bird, Redwing.
It’s worth noting that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is putting Sam in one of his classic red and white outfits, as opposed to his Captain America uniform. This is likely explained by U.S. Agent’s role in the story. It’s been speculated that the government won’t approve of Sam being the new Captain America, especially since he has a history as a fugitive – thanks to Captain America: Civil War. Instead, they may want U.S. Agent for the job instead. If so, Sam may get plenty of chances to suit up in his Falcon costume before officially becoming Steve Rogers’ replacement.
