After years of villainy in defense of his nation, Victor Von Doom has finally gotten a comic book all his own. Which made it all the more shocking when Victor saw his rule sabotaged by terrorists in Doctor Doom #1, forcing him to yield to foreign powers, be taken into custody, and completely change what fans expected from his series in the process.
For those who missed the first issue, it all hinges on the Antlion Project, developed to solve climate change by creating a black hole on the moon. Doom publicly condemned Antlion and warned the world of the disaster it could become. Was it partly motivated by the fact that Reed Richards and Tony Stark solved climate change, and Victor despises them both (but Reed more than anyone else)? It’s impossible to say, but according to the comic, no. Whatever Doom’s motivations, be they academic or personal, he became the world’s most wanted man when Latverian missiles destroyed the Antlion site, killing close to 3,000 people. With no explanation as to why the terrorists would raise his nation’s flag, but knowing his entire country was now in danger, Victor did the unthinkable… and surrendered. Unfortunately, the official preview of Doctor Doom #2 proves that surrender is only the second most humiliating thing the heroes have in store for him.
Even knowing how personal the feud is between Reed and Victor, the preview shows how petty Mr. Fantastic can actually get. Showing up with a smile on his face to take Doom under arrest to face all of his many crimes? Nope. Mr. Fantastic doesn’t even show up to meet him in person. Instead, he makes sure to send a robot–before bothering to program it to call Victor by his proper title. Which one of the them is the villain again? Decide for yourselves after reading the preview below:
