The main antagonists of Marvel’s The Avengers may have been revealed, and its someone fans likely did not see coming. A list of achievements for Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ upcoming Marvel-based team action title was leaked a couple of days ago, providing a few hints on the game’s main story – including the villains the Avengers will be going up against.
So far, the identity of the ones wreaking havoc in Marvel’s The Avengers has been kept largely under wraps, with the only real clues being that the terrorist group A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) launches an attack on the city of San Francisco which then leads to the Avengers disbanding for five years, and a brief battle against the hired assassin Taskmaster. Fans have been speculating that there was a greater mind behind this, but so far no other villains have been revealed for the game, save for another boss fight with the Abomination – at least until now.
According to GamesRadar, the full list of achievements for Marvel’s The Avengers was leaked online Thursday, likely a result of the game’s originally planned, then delayed, release date. This achievements include spoilers for Marvel’s The Avengers, so players hoping to go in fresh should proceed with caution. The leaked achievements for Marvel’s The Avengers includes one titled “New Girl Makes Good,” which comes after the player defeats M.O.D.O.K and the Kree. The fact that this is the last achievement on the list implicates that the confrontation it comes after is, in fact, the final boss fight of the game. Furthermore, another achievement labeled “Welcome Back, Old Friend” implies that the death of Captain America – which serves as one of the major factors of the Avengers’ split in the story, might actually be only temporary, with Steve Rogers showing up alive and well after a rescue mission.
Fans of the comics may recognize M.O.D.O.K. (or “Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing”) as the bizarre leader of A.I.M., created through advanced mutagenics to serve as their genius tactician. As for the Kree, the warlike alien race has been featured prominently in recent Marvel Cinematic Universe films like Guardians Of The Galaxy and Captain Marvel, and are known as the creators of the Inhumans and their offshoots - including Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel, who is set to have an important role in Marvel’s The Avengers as the one who brings the disbanded heroes back together.
Due to the involvement of both A.I.M and Ms. Marvel, it makes sense that M.O.D.O.K. and the Kree would be the final antagonists in Marvel’s The Avengers, although fans might not have expected such an oddball character as the former to serve as the main villain to such a high-profile title. M.O.D.O.K. has appeared in various Marvel games and cartoons in the past, but only as a supporting villain to greater evils like HYDRA and Doctor Doom, so it will be interesting to see the freakish Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing as the main antagonist the Avengers have to stop. Fans will (likely) be able to take him down when Marvel’s The Avengers comes out on September 4th later this year.
