Skrull actor Ben Mendelsohn has some very strong, very colorful opinions about Spider-Man’s future in the MCU, calling Tom Holland’s character one of the “pornstars” of the Marvel universe. Like many fans of Marvel’s recent Spider-Man movies, Mendelsohn clearly feels it would be a shame not to complete the character’s story arc, especially following the twist ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Mendelsohn only recently joined the MCU as Talos the shapeshifting Skrull in Captain Marvel before making an uncredited cameo at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home.
In August, it was announced that the Spider-Man rights-sharing deal between Disney and Sony, the deal that brought the web-slinger into the MCU in the first place, had come to an end. This meant that while there could be more Spider-Man movies with Holland, there could be no more connections to the MCU. This means that the storylines teased at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home would be left unresolved. While fans rallied to the defense of Holland’s Spider-Man, Disney and Sony resumed negotiations over the beloved teenage superhero. Luckily for fans, Disney and Sony managed to reach an agreement in late September. The third installment in the MCU Spider-Man franchise will have a release date of July 16, 2021. Disney Chairman Alan Horn even credited the fan outcry for encouraging Disney and Sony to belatedly work out a deal.
When asked about the Spider-Man back-and-forth in a new interview with Metro, Mendelsohn gave a very passionate response. He claimed that Spider-Man was one of Marvel’s “absolute f-king pornstars” and excluding him from the MCU would have been a total disaster. He even went on to say that he could think of 30 other characters that the MCU could comfortably lose before Spider-Man, stating that there is no other character more important in the franchise. His comments are worth reading in full:
Like many fans, Holland was understandably distraught when the Disney/Sony deal first collapsed, so it wasn’t too surprising when it was revealed that he had been an integral part of the two studios reaching an agreement. Holland reportedly reached out to Disney’s Bob Iger and Sony’s Tom Rothman personally to advocate for Spider-Man’s continued inclusion in the MCU. Even though Holland likely still would have played Spider-Man for Sony, it was clear that he wanted the character’s journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to continue.
But s*** man. You can’t lose Spider-Man from the Marvel universe. He’s one of their absolute motherf***ing pornstars. Boy, I could name 30 that you could quite comfortably lose before you start thinking about losing Spider-Man.
In fact, I cannot think of a single character who’s more important to Marvel than Spider-Man. You’ve got Hulk, you’ve got Thor… none of them are as important as Spider-Man. None of them.
Mendelsohn isn’t the only MCU star to respond to the Disney/Sony agreement. When the deal initially fell through, Jeremy Renner expressed his displeasure with the situation too, saying that Spider-Man belongs in the MCU. After an agreement was reached, Tom Holland’s Far From Home co-star Zendaya tweeted a gif of Spider-Man dancing, showing her support for her friend and costar. Even Tom Holland himself posted a video on Instagram of Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street giving a speech on how he’s “not leaving.” With Mendelsohn’s colorful interview, Spider-Man can now count yet another major MCU actor as a vocal supporter.
