Fans are posting their own Black Widow posters to social media, in honor of the movie’s trailer dropping online this morning. Marvel Studios was originally expected to kick-off its Black Widow marketing at CCXP this weekend, where Kevin Feige will be on-hand to tease their Phase 4 films and Disney+ series. Instead, the studio decided to get a head-start on the competition and release the Black Widow trailer when most people were fast asleep today (in the U.S., anyway). As a result, many are getting their Tuesday started by watching the preview with fresh eyes.
Directed by Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) from a script by Jac Schaeffer (Olaf’s Frozen Adventure), Black Widow takes place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. The movie follows Scarlett Johansson’s still-living Natasha Romanoff as she confronts her past, bringing her face to face with characters like the assassin Yelena (Florence Pugh), Alexei aka. The Red Guardian (David Harbour), and Melina (Rachel Weisz). The idea of Natasha facing her past is also a shared theme in the latest fan-made posters for the film.
Marvel Studios unveiled a Black Widow teaser poster to go with the trailer this morning, but several fans have since put their own spin on the one-sheet. You can check out some of their alternate designs below.
Black Widow won’t be the first time the MCU has explored Natasha’s life before she met Tony Stark and became an Avenger. Avengers: Age of Ultron provided a glimpse at a younger Natasha training to become an assassin via visions induced by Scarlet Witch (who was aligned with Ultron at the time of that film). Those sequences are the basis for one of these fan-made posters, which shows Natasha performing ballet just like she did back in her training program. Both that one-sheet and the other ones are further based around the black widow hourglass featured in the official poster, but add additional details and imagery to give it less of a minimalistic appearance. Arguably, some of these fan posters are better than the real one, but that’s to be expected since it’s only a teaser.
The actual film looks and sounds intriguing so far, between its Bourne-esque narrative and shades of recent assassin thrillers like Atomic Blonde and John Wick; this year’s John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum even featured a scene where future assassins train as ballerinas like the young Natasha did, further inviting the comparisons between the two. Many fans found Natasha’s death in this year’s Avengers: Endgame to be unsatisfying (even if they understood it from a story perspective), so Black Widow has the potential to offer a better payoff to her journey in the MCU. And as the first entry in Phase 4, the movie will hopefully set the stage for the MCU to continue evolving and breaking new ground over the next couple years.
