In all of Marvel history, the Kree and Skrull races have never gotten along. The two have had galaxy-spanning wars, most popularized in the early 1970s Avengers comics. But in 2020 the Kree-Skrull War is going to be re-examined – beginning with Road to Empyre: The Kree/Skrull War.

In 2019’s Meet the Skrulls by Robbie Thompson, Niko Henrichon, and Marcos Martin, a group of Skrulls go undercover on Earth as the ‘Warner’ family, who are gathering data for the next Skrull invasion. The Skrulls participate in day-to-day life, but end up stuck on Earth completely cut off from the empire. The family’s future was uncertain, but the Warners are back in the upcoming one-shot. And they’re just the beginning of the larger Empyre event on the way.

In the upcoming one-shot ahead of Marvel’s Empyre event, the Warner family will return to figure out what happened after the upcoming murder mystery Incoming! and what the events mean for their family. The book will be a refresher for those unfamiliar with history of the Kree/Skrull War. The Warner Family will educate their kids on what caused the fighting.

The original Kree/Skrull War of the comics occurred in the comics in the early ’70s, spanning The Avengers #89-97 by Roy Thomas, Sal Buscema, Neal Adams, and John Buscema. In the book, Earth is caught in the crossfire of the Kree and Skrull war. The Kree are a technologically advanced alien race, while the Skrulls are shapeshifters who reverse engineer the Krees tech. It’s an epic battle for dominance, technology, and power. There have been many Kree-Skrull Wars since the original one.

The upcoming one-shot is using the Warner family’s children as a vehicle for an important information dump ahead of the Empyre event. The Skrulls and Kree have a decade-spanning history that’s been convoluted at times. Educating the kids will also educate the audience in the important details of the alien race’s histories. Empyre has been teased as an “earth-shattering event” that’s grown out of a number of Marvel stories. Getting a small refresher while reintroducing welcome characters from Meet the Skrulls is the perfect way to keep readers in the loop ahead of the event. A new story, or even a new Kree-Skrull War seems to be coming. But before that happens, Marvel smartly will fill in readers who want to know more ahead of the event.
