Throughout the filming of Marvel’s Eternals movie, several set photos have been released showing off characters like Thena (Angelina Jolie), Ikaris (Richard Madden), and Black Knight (Kit Harrington). Filming is still taking place, so more will be released as the process continues.
Eternals is the second movie on Marvel Studios’ slate for Phase 4 and also its second (and last) film releasing in 2020. Directed by Chloe Zhao, Eternals unites a large ensemble cast featuring names like Jolie, Harrington, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, and more. Based on the creations of the legendary comic book writer and artist Jack Kirby, Eternals tells the story of a race of ancient alien beings who were created by the Celestials. For thousands of years, the Eternals and their ancestral enemies, the Deviants, have secretly shared the Earth with humankind.
The Eternals are among the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe. Though their appearances are limited in Marvel Comics, they’ll soon be making their live-action debut in the MCU. It should be noted that nearly every main member of the Eternals is being represented in the film. As for the movie’s villains, no casting announcements for the Deviants have been made as of yet, but since the film releases in November, more Eternals news should be forthcoming. Until then, fans can only find hints about what Eternals will entail in what little Marvel has officially said about the subject, a footage description, some concept art, and set photos. Here are all the photos taken on the set of Eternals that have been released so far.
Eternals Set Photo: Angelina Jolie With Blond Hair
The first set photos from Eternals showed Angelina Jolie on set in England with her hair dyed blond to match the hair of her character, Thena, who is one of the most important members of the Eternals in the comics, and for a time, their leader. Jolie’s Thena is seen in a white dress, seemingly scooping water from a lake. Based on her attire, this may very well be a flashback scene.
Eternals Set Photo: A Medieval Setting (And A Fire)
Shot at the same location, is a scene that looks like it may take place in a Medieval setting. A large fire near the lake could be a funeral pyre. The scene is believed to be set sometime in the MCU’s distant past. Since Jolie was shooting nearby, her character may be included in this scene. Some have theorized that the time period could link it to Black Knight’s origin story. In Marvel Comics, Black Knight is the descendant of an Arthurian swordsman named Sir Percy.
Eternals Set Photo: Sersi in Modern Day London
Gemma Chan, who plays Sersi, was spotted in green colors (her comic book character’s primary color scheme) while walking around a busy London street. Her modern clothes and the London setting served as an early indication that Eternals isn’t a prequel to the MCU, and at least some of the film is set in modern times. Sersi mingling with humans in a city makes sense for the character, considering that the comic book version of Sersi enjoyed being a part of human society. It’s since been officially confirmed by Marvel that Eternals follows the events of Avengers: Endgame.
Eternals Set Photo: Ikaris In Action
Star of Game of Thrones Richard Madden was spotted on set as Ikaris, who has been called “all-powerful” in Marvel’s official synopsis for Eternals. Madden, dressed in blue jeans and a denim jacket, has a stunt double, which indicates that Madden was filming an action scene at the time. A scene where Madden is suspended in the air could mean that the MCU’s Ikaris, like all Eternals in the comics, can fly.
Eternals Set Photo: Gates of Babylon
Eternals also filmed on the Canary Islands. One particular location appears to be Babylon, a kingdom that existed in Mesopotamia over two thousand years ago. Babylon can be clearly identified by images of a set piece designed to be a replica of Babylon’s Ishtar Gate. A building near the Gates of Babylon is believed to be the City of the Space Gods, a key location from the first issue of Kirby’s original Eternals comic book series. The City of the Space Gods is where Ikaris was when he explained the origin of the Eternals to the human characters in the comic.
Eternals Set Photo: More Images of Babylon
As filming continued on the Canary Islands, more Eternals images were released, which highlight some of the surrounding areas outside of the Babylonian city. The photos reveal some of the desert scenery in Marvel’s recreation of Babylon. No Eternals actors were identified in these scenes, so context is difficult to determine.
Eternals Set Photo: Thena, Sersi, and Phastos In Costume
Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, and Brian Tyree Henry were photographed in-costume as Thena, Sersi, and Phastos respectively, just days after the discovery of a Nazi bomb caused the stars to evacuate the Canary Islands set. The costumes for all the main Eternals were officially revealed at SDCC 2019, but this was the first time that they were seen wearing them on set. Though there are some differences, their costumes are for the most part comic book accurate, especially in terms of their color schemes. Judging by their poses, an intense sequence or a fight of some kind may be what we’re seeing.
Eternals Set Photo: Black Knight and Sersi
Kit Harrington is playing Dane Whitman in Eternals, who is better known as the Black Knight, a classic member of the Avengers and Marvel’s greatest swordsman. In recent set photos, Harrington was shown walking alongside Gemma Chan in what appeared to be a field. The two are engaged in a conversation, but also hug. Chan was also spotted doing wire work while at this location. This appears to be further proof that the Eternals in the movie can fly. Neither character was seen wearing a costume, and it’s still unclear if Harrington’s Whitman will suit up as Black Knight at all in the movie.
