Marvel head Kevin Feige reveals Eternals will take place over the course of 7,000 years. Officially announced this summer at San Diego Comic-Con, Eternals will be the second film in the MCU’s Phase 4 and introduce a race of immortal beings with incredible powers. The massive cast includes Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Gemma Chan, Kit Harington, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh, Lauren Ridloff, and Don Lee.
Despite the film still being just under a year away, Feige debuted the first Eternals footage at Brazil’s Comic-Con Experience last weekend to positive fan reactions. Attendees of the convention were granted sneak peeks at most of the main characters in their costumes, something that so far has only been hinted at in concept art. Feige also revealed that the Eternals know who the Avengers are, even if they haven’t crossed paths yet.
Based on the immortal nature of the characters, as well as various Eternals set photos that have popped up, fans have wondered exactly when the film will take place. While at CCXP, Feige confirmed Eternals would span over 7,000 years (via Collider), showing the characters at different places in time. This means the film will dive deeper into the MCU’s past than ever before. How the plot can sustain the many time jumps that will no doubt be included is unclear, but seeing as Eternals will be unlike any MCU film that came before, it’s possible the story will follow a different pattern too.
Feige also confirmed the Deviants will be introduced in Eternals. In the comics, both the Eternals and the Deviants were created by the Celestials. However, while the Eternals were made to be genetically superior with their abilities and long lives, the Deviants were deformed beings. Over the years, the Eternals have fought against the Deviants to protect humanity. Feige said the film’s version of the Deviants will look different than they do in the comics.
Eternals is already one of the MCU’s most intriguing projects, showing a noticeable difference from the films that came before. A common criticism lobbed at the MCU is that sometimes it does not take risks and instead sticks to its carefully constructed house style. Eternals offers the chance to step away from that and take a big swing at something new, as evidenced by the cosmic characters and wide-ranging story. With an exciting cast and thousands of years of history to play with, Eternals has a lot going for it. Hopefully it doesn’t miss the mark.
