New images from the set of Marvel’s Eternals offer the first glimpse at Richard Madden’s Ikaris floating over the streets of London. Madden was spotted on set with his Game Of Thrones co-star Kit Harington and Dunkirk’s Barry Keoghan. Marvel’s newest epic began filming in the UK back in mid-September of last year.
In the comics, the Eternals were sent to Earth 35,000 years ago by beings known as the Celestials. Their mission was to protect humankind from a third race called the Deviants. The concept is strange even by comic book standards, and the property was never a blockbuster for Marvel Comics. Fast forward to 2019 when Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige announced that Chloé Zhao’s Eternals was part of MCU Phase 4 plan for the MCU, with Madden, Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek in the cast (Harington and Keoghan were added later at D23). Now, with filming well underway, tiny glimpses of the big-screen adaptation of creator Jack Kirby’s Marvel masterpiece are making their way to the public.
The new Eternals images, posted to Twitter by a Richard Madden fan account richardmupdates, reveal Madden (in character as Ikaris) harnessed to a large crane that lifts him high above the streets of London. The fan account also notes that Madden was joined on set by Keoghan, playing Druig a somewhat antagonistic Eternal, and Harington as the Black Knight, a character from the pages of The Avengers who ends up dating the Eternal Sersi in the comics.
Levitation is only one of Ikaris’ many powers; the de facto leader of the Eternals also possesses superhuman strength, telepathy, teleportation and can blast cosmic energy from his eyes and hands. It’s still unknown what other powers the character might display in the film.
Also interesting about the photos is the presence of Harington’s Dane Whitman and Keoghan’s Druig. Whitman is otherwise known as Black Knight and is widely expected to be the lead of the movie. Druig, on the other hand, is a villain in the comics, making this flight scene all the more intriguing.
In typical Marvel Studios fashion many of the Eternals movie’s details are still a closely guarded secret. A recently released synopsis reveals that the film takes place after Avengers: Endgame when “an unexpected tragedy” causes the team to “reunite” against the Deviants, and Feige already revealed that the events of the movie would span over a 7,000 year period. That seemingly vast timespan coupled with a large cast of complicated characters might indicate trouble in another studio’s hands, but if Avengers: Endgame proved anything it’s that the company knows how to tell an epic story that encompasses multiple leads. While these last few months of filming have provided multiple looks at the Eternals themselves, there’s been no sign yet of the deformed Deviants, which could mean they’ll be CGI/performance capture creations. Whatever the case, Feige has also mentioned the Deviants will look different than their comic book counterparts.
