One of the long awaited projects announced to be part of Marvel Studios’ Phase 3 schedule was The Inhumans, a film that would continue to take the MCU into the cosmos and introduce Marvel’s growing superpowered group. However, Kevin Feige’s power move to the top of the studio put the future of the project in doubt, and it was quietly canceled last year. This unfortunate news for comic fans came with some surprising results, since ABC, IMAX, and Marvel then announced a deal to turn it into an eight episode first season that would debut the first two episodes in a movie format for a limited time.
The announcement caught many by surprise as even Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - a show that has largely connected itself to the Inhuman lore - continued to distance itself from story-driven connections in season 4. Now that 2017 is here, production should begin shortly ahead of Inhumans debuting in September and it appears that the start date has now been revealed.
Production Weekly and Season Zero Com are reporting that Marvel and ABC will begin filming Inhumans this March in Los Angeles and Chicago. Last month Marvel confirmed Iron Fist helmer Scott Buck will be the showrunner for Inhumans, but he will need much more than just himself to begin production in two months. Story details have remained hidden for now, with the exception being a confirmed focus on the Royal Family.
Should this report come to be true, it indicates Marvel’s casting department on the TV side is going to be extremely busy for the next two months, if they have not been so already. There figure to be multiple prominent roles available for the show, with Black Bolt, Medusa, Karnak, Triton, Maximus the Mad, and others thought to be involved. Marvel could already have secretly cast a few members to their latest series, but have so far not made any official announcements.
Even though this reported start date has not been confirmed by Marvel, it is not completely surprising either. It became clear early on that the series would be coming out in September - Labor Day weekend in theaters and September 26th on television - so filming would have to start a few months before then to assure the crew had time to shoot and edit together the episodes. The Inhumans themselves may not be the most well-known property, but thanks to the way in which the series is being made and released, interest should continue to be high as it draws closer.
The Inhumans will be shown in theaters for two weeks starting Labor Day weekend, prior to the first episode premiering September 26, 2017 on ABC.
