Marvel Studios president is making a move to Star Wars, as he’ll produce a new movie in the galaxy far, far away. After acquiring Lucasfilm in 2012, Disney moved quickly to bring the Star Wars franchise back to the big screen and return it to prominence. Their plan was to release a new movie every single year starting in 2015 with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This plan led to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016, Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017, Solo: A Star Wars Story the next year, and will see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker end the Skywalker Saga this December.
After this initial rollout though - something Bob Iger admits was too quick - the future of Star Wars is much more unknown. Rian Johnson is still developing a new trilogy, as are Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. That is all we’ve known for sure about their big-screen plans, while several shows are in development for Disney+. Now, it is being reported that Marvel Studios’ own Kevin Feige is getting involved.
In a surprising piece of news from THR, it has been revealed that Feige will work with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy to develop a new Star Wars movie for Disney. At this time, there are no details on what Feige’s movie will be or when it will come out. But, the idea came as a result of a recent meeting between Feige, Kennedy, studio co-chairmen Alan Horn and Alan Bergman. Here’s Horn’s statement on the matter:
Since becoming president of Marvel Studios, Feige has become one of Hollywood’s biggest, brightest, and most successful producers. The last eleven years of building the Marvel Cinematic Universe resulted in them developing an unparalleled connected universe, which led to Avengers: Endgame becoming the highest-grossing movie in history. With this new announcement, Feige - a self-proclaimed big Star Wars fan - will get his chance to tell a story in the galaxy far, far away.
We are excited about the projects Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on, not only in terms of Star Wars but also Indiana Jones and reaching into other parts of the company including Children of Blood and Bone with Emma Watts and Fox. With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together.
However, this move is not envisioned as a hint towards the near future and Feige jumping from Marvel Studios to run Lucasfilm. This report notes that Kennedy is still very much in charge and recently extended her stay through 2021. Meanwhile, Feige now has access to the Fantastic Four and X-Men and a slate of movies announced into 2022. After years of waiting to see all of Marvel’s characters - except for Spider-Man now - under his control, it would be a shocking turn of events for him to leave before bringing them to the big screen.
That all said, this could be the beginning of Feige having some involvement with the Star Wars franchise. It is difficult to imagine that he only has one story he wants to tell in this universe and could be involved with an entire franchise. Additionally, this either dispels the talk that Feige was too busy for Spider-Man or could be the reason why his plate is even more full than it was before. Even with plenty of details still unknown on Feige’s plans for this movie, his involvement is an exciting development for the Star Wars franchise overall.
