Marvel Television is moving into comedy and younger heroes with New Warriors and it has been confirmed which heroes will make up the team. Freeform is set to get their second Marvel related series next year (along with Cloak & Dagger), but New Warriors should be unlike anything else on Marvel TV. The series is set up to be only ten episodes long and be more of a sitcom, similar to what DC is doing right now with Powerless. However, in an effort to boost interest in the New Warriors TV show, it has been revealed that Doreen Green aka Squirrel Girl, will be leading the squad.
Ever since New Warriors was announced, there has been some question as to who else will be joining Squirrel Girl, as part of the TV show’s hero lineup. In the world of Marvel Comics, the New Warriors consist of lesser-known heroes in the public conscious - and Marvel has now confirmed that it intends to use many of those same characters in the TV iteration too.
Marvel has now officially announced the six heroes that will form the New Warriors TV show team. With Squirrel Girl already being confirmed for a leading role, Marvel has also announced that Craig Hollis aka Mister Immortal, Dwayne Taylor aka Night Thrasher, Robbie Baldwin aka Speedball, Zack Smith aka Microbe, and Deborah Fields aka Debrii will be be joining Miss Green on her adventures. Here are the official character descriptions for the main heroes in New Warriors:
Doreen Green (Squirrel Girl) Superpower: “The powers of a squirrel, the powers of a girl” (is acrobatic, strong, can fight, can talk to squirrels) - Doreen is a totally empowered fangirl. She is a natural leader—confident and tough, but not innocent. Doreen is bouncy and energetic and her greatest quality is her optimism… She has faith in others and inspires people to believe in themselves. She also takes her pet squirrel, Tippy Toe, everywhere.
Craig Hollis (Mister Immortal) Superpower: Cannot die. Ever. Maybe. So he says. - The team troublemaker and lothario… Craig is kind of like “The Most Interesting Man Alive,” except he’s more cocky than confident and at times, charmingly grumpy. Although Craig’s superpower seems amazing, he hasn’t made use of it at all—he’s lazy and figures if he has all the time in the world to learn how to fight, what’s the rush?
Dwayne Taylor (Night Thrasher) Superpower: None - Dwayne is a local celebrity “hero” with his very own YouTube channel. Brilliant, strong, noble, and maybe a bit full of himself, Dwayne is a shameless self-promoter and entrepreneur. But he also deeply believes in justice — at least his version of it. Dwayne hides the fact that he comes from a really rich family because he’s afraid he’ll lose his street cred.
Robbie Baldwin (Speedball) Superpower: Can launch kinetic balls of energy - Robbie grew up watching Quinjets take off from Avengers Tower and loves the idea of being a hero. He’s an impulsive and immature people-pleaser with a misplaced sense of confidence. Although you would think throwing kinetic balls of energy would be awesome and effective – his are completely out of control.
Zack Smith (Microbe) Superpower: Can talk to germs - Zack is a shy hypochondriac whose ability nearly makes him a telepath — the germs tell him where you’ve been, what you ate and who you hung out with. It’s impossible to keep secrets around him. He’s a big sweet guy the team takes under their wing, and they help him find and grow his own confidence.
Deborah Fields (Debrii) Superpower: Low level telekinetic; trickster - Deborah is proud, funny and quick witted. Confidently out as a lesbian, Deborah has experienced deep loss in her personal life as a direct result of super “heroics.” She can take care of herself, or at least says she can. She’s the one who calls people on their BS and has no fear of putting her opinions out there.
This is not a typical New Warriors lineup and more so a combination of many different teams that have been seen before. That said, the group assembled is one that is well diverse in power sets, but also in their personalities and looks. Outside of the roster, the comic art the accompanied this announcement is interesting. The stage, screens, and cameras could indicate that the show will follow the 2005 comic run that saw the team be stars of their own reality TV series. If this is the case, the creative choice to make this a comedy could work even better.
With the series said to follow these characters right as they turn to adulthood, the casting process should bring in a new batch of 20-something heroes into the MCU. They won’t be quite as young as the heroes on Cloak & Dagger or Hulu’s Runaways, but this will give the show a new demographic all its own. New Warriors is not scheduled to debut on Freeform till sometime in 2018, but with a writer’s room assembling, it may not be terribly long before the cast is announced as well.
