Filming is officially underway on season 3 of Hulu’s Marvel series Runaways. Hulu and Marvel originally announced their partnership on a live-action Runaways series in 2016, several years after the comic property was in consideration to be one of Marvel Studios’ first round of movies. Runaways debuted on the streaming service in late 2017, and released new episodes on a weekly basis.
For season 2, Hulu and Marvel increased the episode count from 10 to 13 and decided to drop the episodes all at once at the very end of last year. Reception of the second season was just as favorable as the first, with the finale leaving plenty of loose threads for a third season to explore. It wasn’t long before it was reported that a renewal was likely, and after one of the cast members appeared to confirm the news at a convention, an official announcement that season 3 was happening came.
Two months after this renewal was announced, Marvel announced that production is officially underway on the third season of Runaways. The series will continue to see Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage serve as the showrunners, and the main cast of kids and their parents are all expected to return - except for Kip Pardue potentially. The new season will be 10 episodes long, as previously revealed, but no release window has been confirmed at this point.
Now that season 3 is in production, more details on the season will hopefully arrive before too long. The plot of the season should continue to explore the arrival and infiltration of the Gibborim, who have managed to abduct Karolina Dean (Virgina Gardner) and Chase Stein (Gregg Sulkin). There’s also the unanswered question of what’s happening with Nico Minoru (Lyrica Okano) after she appeared to have been infected by the Dark Dimension. This is just what may happen based on what we saw in season 2, so there’s no telling what other storylines Runaways is set to explore.
One of the biggest questions this will leave fans with is when the new season will be released. Marvel and Hulu have not yet confirmed a release date for season 3, but the history of Runaways is likely a solid indicator of what will happen again. Season 2 started filming in June of 2018 and wrapped in September, just a few months before its December launch. With season 3 getting a month head start on the start of production and a shorter episode count, it should have no trouble being finished ahead of the winter season, if that’s where Hulu and Marvel want to keep Runaways that is.
