The Marvel Studios’ WandaVision TV show release date is officially changed to 2020, with the series now set to arrive earlier than expected. At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige unveiled the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 slate, which includes a handful of movies and, for the first time ever, television series. The TV shows are being created as Disney+ exclusives, with the first being The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in Fall 2020, followed by WandaVision in Spring 2021.
Although Marvel didn’t offer any firm release dates, the studio has been hard at work developing their slate of TV shows. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier started filming late in 2019, and despite receiving a 2021 release date, WandaVision is also currently in production. WandaVision set photos have already showcased not only Elizabeth Olsen’s return as Wanda Maximoff, but Teyonah Parris as grown up Monica Rambeau. Also returning for the series is Paul Bettany as Vision, even though the android was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Now, the early filming start makes sense, as Marvel and Disney move up the WandaVision premiere date.
As confirmed by a Disney+ video previewing what users can expect to arrive on the streaming service in 2020, both The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision will release this year. This means WandaVision moves up from its previous Spring 2021 release date window, though it’s unclear when exactly in 2020 the Marvel series will premiere. See the video below, it confirms WandaVision releases in 2020 at the 37 second mark.
Since The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was previously set for Fall 2020 and WandaVision now joins the Captain America spinoff on this year’s slate, it’s likely the former will move up, potentially to the summer window. Considering the success of Star Wars’ The Mandalorian, Disney+ is no doubt eager to unveil its first Marvel offering as soon as possible. And since TV shows typically take much less time to produce than movies, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier could arrive earlier than expected, leaving the end of 2020 open for WandaVision. Still, fans won’t know exactly when either Marvel Disney+ series will air until the streamer confirms their specific premiere dates.
Until that time, fans can keep their eyes peeled for revelations from the WandaVision set as filming continues. Marvel and Disney+ have been slowly releasing teases of the series, with the first WandaVision poster debuting at D23 2019 and an image at CCXP last month. The WandaVision first look image features a retro Wanda Maximoff and a human Vision - matching the D23 poster. It also confirms what was said about the series during Marvel’s portion of the D23 Disney+ panel, that WandaVision will be “half classic sitcom, half MCU spectacular,” with the poster and image teasing the first part of that statement. Further, set photos confirm the “MCU spectacular” portion of WandaVision will include SWORD, so there’s plenty for fans to be excited about in this series.
There’s still much we don’t know about WandaVision, like how everything we do know fits together. But with the WandaVision release date moved up to 2020 and filming to continue in the new year, fans will learn more about what’s to come from Marvel’s Phase 4 offerings sooner rather than later.
