The X-Men finally have a nation of their own, with their proclaimed plan for the future of mutantkind met with the murder of Charles Xavier. Unfortunately for mutants’ enemies, he got better. And in X-Men #4 he and Krakoa’s leaders are being invited to the table with the rest of Earth’s nations.
Unlike past interactions between Xavier and the world’s nations, he is no longer respresenting ‘mutants,’ but the sovereign nation founded by them on the island of Krakoa, already recognized by the United Nations. That recognition certainly didn’t change the minds of mutant enemies, who think the 16 million mutants slaughtered on Genosha was an unfinished job. And in Marvel’s official preview of X-Men #4, it may not be a coincidence that Xavier is accepting an invitation to the World Economic Forum… flanked by Magneto and Apocalypse, the two most fearsome mutants alive.
It should come as no surprise that the only thing able to tip the scales against xenophobia or old grudges is money – and the ability for Krakoa to make it by selling the world medicines and cures only possible through the living mutant island of Krakoa. But if we had to guess, Xavier won’t be volunteering the fact that the Quiet Council of Krakoa is working to found a new mutant island in the Atlantic (currently codenamed ‘Island M’). Will this visit also include the mutants being forced to explain the Dungeons & Dragons invasion unleashed by Excalibur? Or the somewhat… less than subtle Maruaders’s mission? Those questions will have to wait. For now, enjoy the official preview pages:
Fans will be awaiting the rest of the issue with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. After all, the last time the mutant leadership let their guard down to intermingle with humans, they were fitted with a tracking device so a strike team could infiltrate Krakoa wearing a mutant’s skin, seek out and execute Charles Xavier. Something tells us that even though he’s been resurrected like the rest of the fallen mutants, he might not be exactly the same person he was before being shot down. And if that’s the case… then this issue may not be one to miss. Until the full issue arrives, readers can check out the official plot synopsis and credits below:
