Marvel’s new X-Force team is following a long line of brutal, but necessary strike forces. But their mission is no longer what it used to be, and the team assembled for the series is reflecting the changing status quo for Marvel’s mutants. No longer defending the mutant dream, but defending the mutant nation, it’s time for X-Force to evolve into the mutant CIA. That will apparently include covert, undercover agents, since “a new nation means new enemies…”

It’s a brave new world for the X-Men as a result of Marvel’s reboot, now that Charles Xavier has led the creation of the mutant nation of Krakoa, triggering a game-changing “Dawn of X” and launching new X-Men teams and comics. As part of that new launch, writer Benjamin Percy and artist Joshua Cassara are debuting the new X-Force series unlike any before. And now that the first official preview has arrived, fans can see how quickly these black ops soldiers will be diving behind enemy lines. Good thing they have luck on their side.

While Logan appears on the team’s first issue cover, and Percy is also the writer of Marvel’s new Wolverine comic, he previously explained to Marvel that the furious fighter is no longer the embodiment of the team’s mission:

In fact, sometimes it may be the one mutant operative most likely not to be noticed at all who’s leading the charge. Or in the case of Marvel’s official preview of X-Force #1, the mutant most capable of escaping an impossible trap. Check out the preview below:

They are a mutant nation, which means this is the mutant CIA… The thing about this team is that’s a big roster. Not everybody is gonna be in every issue. Sometimes we’ll have an issue that just follows Domino. Sometimes we’ll have an issue that’s more about two characters in particular. Sometimes we’ll have one that’s more investigative work. Sometimes we’ll have one that’s more wet work. The only thing that you can expect is the unexpected.
