Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke took the world by storm in 1964 as the magical nanny and a jack of all trades respectively. Mary Poppins has been a classic film ever since, and Disney is finally ready to continuing on with the mythology. Next year will see Disney follow-up the franchise with Emily Blunt stepping into the leading role for Mary Poppins Returns.
Blunt will not be alone in this endeavor as the studio has surrounded her with an incredible cast. One of the most exciting additions for many has been the inclusion of Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. He is currently one of the biggest names in the industry thanks to the success of Hamilton, but also found acclaim for his work last year on Disney’s Moana. Miranda will be playing Jack, a lamp-lighter that gets swept up in the adventure with Poppins. Now, thanks to the first batch of set photos, fans can take a look at him in character.
Photos have emerged on Twitter, providing our first set look from the sequel that’ll take place 20 years after the original. With filming now underway, Blunt has been spotted in a slightly different costume than the official first look provided. Also revealed is our first look at Miranda in costume.

While Miranda may be a well-known name for many, a prominent role in Mary Poppins Returns will further increase his popularity and recognizability. Musical and Broadway fans know who he is, but he has not yet had a breakout role in theaters. Playing off of Blunt in what may be one of the biggest hits of next year should change that.
There is currently no official word on how big of a presence Miranda will have not only in front of the camera or the film’s music. It would be surprising for Disney to not utilize his talents to help create a new sound for the sequel, especially with the likelihood that he’ll be front and center for at least one musical number.
With looks at Blunt and Miranda now out of the way, it will be interesting to see what other cast members are revealed before marketing officially begins on the movie. Meryl Streep will be making an appearance in the film, along with Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Colin Firth, Dick Van Dyke, and Angela Lansbury. With Rob Marshall at the helm and a highly coveted Christmas Day release, Mary Poppins Returns is set up to make a big splash.
