Matt Reeves’ The Batman script is complete. The Batman is a movie that has been in development for some time, and it has seen a wide variety of changes over the past few years. The original plan was to have Ben Affleck reprise his role as the Caped Crusader in the movie, however that changed after Reeves took over as director and decided to recast Batman.

Reeves and Warner Bros. cast Robert Pattinson as Batman, which resulted in considerable backlash from fans. As so many moviegoers associate Pattinson with his role in Twilight, many felt he would not have the gravitas to pull off the dark and severe grit of Batman. However, as Reeves also decided to rewrite The Batman film’s script, the director made his choice based on how he saw the character coming to life. The producers of The Batman have also asked fans not to pre-judge Pattinson in the role because they trust Reeves’ vision for the Dark Knight of Gotham City.

Although Reeves has kept most of that new script’s content secret, it was recently revealed in an interview Pattinson did with Variety that the script was complete. When summing up the process of how the actor got the role, Variety notes “when Reeves finally finished a script,” the director agreed to meet with Pattinson. Then Pattinson said:

Pattinson, who finally read the script while attending a premiere in Cannes, was vocal about his passion for the role and his excitement about taking on the character of Batman. He discussed how it’s something he has wanted for a long time. Pattinson pursued Reeves after learning the director was writing a film based on Batman’s early years. Perhaps that’s why the actor was angry when leaks surfaced that Reeves was considering him; Pattinson stated he felt the initial backlash would spook Warner Bros. away from casting him. Pattinson had nothing to fear, though, since Warner Bros. seemed to have no problem with his casting.

“And then I had to kind of try to imagine what he’d written, and I hadn’t even read the script. I’d come with this pad full of notes.”

The Batman is moving along, now with a completed script. Pattinson has also already tried on his Batsuit. The film, which is scheduled to release in 2021, seems to be right on track. However, Batman is one of those characters that has seen many iterations, and Pattinson is already the seventh actor to take on the role on the big screen . Considering the numerous Batman TV shows and movies, fans can only hope that Pattinson’s acting and Reeves’ script will breathe new life into a character that has been popular for over 80 years. But if anything, the rave reviews of Todd Phillips’ Joker has shown that moviegoers still appreciate seeing new stories for old characters.
