Airing on The CW from 2007 until 2012, Gossip Girl told the story of a group of wealthy teens who were no strangers to scheming, love triangles, and crazy amounts of drama.
The show made stars out of Blake Lively and Leighton Meester and is still talked about to this day for the fabulous outfits that the characters wore. The series is so fast-paced that even the most loyal fans might forget some of the intricate details of each episode, but one thing is for sure: the characters are super memorable.
Let’s take a look at the MBTI of the characters on Gossip Girl.
8. Vanessa Abrams: ENFP
Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr) is Dan Humphrey’s artistic best friend. She’s an aspiring filmmaker and although she goes to the fancy girls private school, she can’t stand any of the rich kids. Oh, and she’s secretly in love with Dan (because this is a teen drama, after all).
Vanessa will stop at nothing to do what she wants or thinks is right. She even sends a short story that Dan wrote to The New Yorker. (Thankfully, it gets published.) Her MBTI is ENTP or “Imaginative Motivator.” She’s “creative” and “spontaneous” and “expressive.” Her artistic dreams are right in line with this personality type, too, as this type is drawn to jobs like photography, acting, and art of any kind.
7. Jenny Humphrey: ENTJ
It’s pretty hilarious that Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen), her brother Dan, and their dad Rufus are considered to be “from the wrong side of the tracks” when they literally live in Brooklyn. But that’s the world of Gossip Girl, and compared to the other rich kids, they just don’t measure up.
Although Jenny has an awesome personal style and comes from a sweet family, she’s more than a little bit of a follower. She wants nothing more than to be one of Blair Waldorf’s minions and tries really hard to fit in. By the third season, though, she’s a totally different person and files for emancipation and runs away from home.
Her MBTI would be ENTJ or “Decisive Strategist.” She doesn’t like when she’s not in control and she doesn’t like when other people act like she can’t do anything. She even tries to be Blair and rule the school.
6. Rufus Humphrey: INTP
Rufus Humphrey (Matthew Settle) is a single dad who used to be a rock star. He’s a nice guy but seems like he missed the boat in terms of truly following his dreams and also finding love. He loves Lily, but they can never figure out a way to make their romance work.
Rufus is an INTP or “Objective Analyst.” He’s definitely an introvert and is very sensitive. When it comes to his relationships, he fits into what the official description says: “Their partner, peers, family members, and friends will likely see them as introspective and needing autonomy.” He honestly fades into the background of the show since he mostly talks to his kids or is trying to figure out his complicated situation with Lily.
5. Lilly Van Der Woodsen: ISFP
Lily van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford) is a bit of a sad case. Sure, she’s got all the money in the world, but she definitely proves that money doesn’t equal happiness because her life is fabulous yet empty.
She has several ex-husbands and has an off-again, on-again romance with Rufus Humphrey. Viewers always get the feeling that she can’t admit that she truly loves him and that she’s too concerned with status and having people think that she’s living the high life. Her MBTI is ISFP or “Versatile Supporter.” She is always content to stand on someone’s arm and support them, but she’ll do so quietly and she won’t make a fuss. She is “reserved” and “modest” and “practical.” She may love the people in her life but she has a hard time saying it.
4. Chuck Bass: INFJ
Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) always has a look in his eyes as if he’s working on a massive scheme. He’s a mysterious guy with a dark and tragic family history, as his mom died after giving birth to him and then his dad dies when he’s a teenager. Chuck’s one true love is Blair, but it takes them a while to get over their immaturity and be together.
His MBTI is INFJ or “Insightful Visionary.” He is both “sensitive” and “reserved” and a mystery even to those who fall in love with him. The official description sounds just like Chuck: “They are sometimes seen as mysterious, as they tend to share their internal intuitions only with those they truly trust.”
3. Dan Humphrey: ISTJ
Before Penn Badgley played creepy stalker Joe Goldberg on You, he was… a creepy stalker on Gossip Girl. No, but actually: in the series finale, it was revealed that nice guy Dan Humphrey was actually the mysterious “Gossip Girl” who wrote about everyone’s secrets.
It made a ton of sense since Dan is a talented writer and a careful observer of everyone. But it might have been surprising to some fans all the same. Dan is an ISTJ or “Responsible Realist.” He understands that he doesn’t come from a wealthy background but does his best to succeed. He’s the kind of boyfriend that Serena can always depend on and a good friend to Vanessa. The words that describe him are “dependable” and “painstaking” and “analytical.”
2. Blair Waldorf: ESTJ
Blair Waldorf’s (Leighton Meester) MBTI has to be ESTJ or “Efficient Organizer.” She loves to be in charge and will stop at nothing to organize her minions at the Constance Billard School for Girls. Deep down, she’s a kind girl who is deeply insecure, but like many other rich kids, she masks that with mean remarks and lots of judgment toward those who aren’t as well-off or fabulous as she is.
The official description of ESTJs is “They often have an extensive network of contacts and are willing to make tough decisions when necessary.” That is absolutely Blair, who is often scheming and on her cell phone a lot of the time. She is “confident” and “outspoken” and doesn’t like feeling like she’s not in charge.
1. Serena Van Der Woodsen: ESFP
Blake Lively made a name for herself after starring as Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl and it’s easy to see why. She plays the charming, sweet character perfectly.
Her MBTI is ESFP or “Enthusiastic Improviser.” Since Serena has a touch of the whole “poor little rich girl” thing, she’s always confident and social. As the official description says, “People with ESFP preferences tend to be adaptable, friendly, and expressive. They enjoy life and being around people.” Serena is always game for a party, a date, or an adventure. When ESFPs are in a relationship, they’re described as “spontaneous” which is definitely Serena. Although the other Gossip Girl characters make a big impression, it’s impossible to imagine the show being as successful without Serena at the center of it.
