Melissa Joan Hart returned to her role as Sabrina Spellman from Sabrina the Teenage Witch for a sketch on The Late Late Show with James Corden. The sitcom, based on the Archie Comics series of the same name, debuted in 1996 on ABC. The cast included Hart, who played the titular character, Caroline Rhea and Beth Broderick who played her aunts Hilda and Zelda, respectively, and Nick Bakay who provided the voice for her sassy cat, Salem. The series followed Sabrina as she learned to navigate high school while also getting a handle on her supernatural abilities. It ran for 7 seasons, until 2003, but received a much darker reboot last year at Netflix.
Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina took a darker path when chronicling the life and times of Sabrina Spellman and starred Kiernan Shipka as the titular teen this time around. The show was based on the comic book of the same name, which found Sabrina plunged into the world of dark magic and faced with a life-altering decision of being a powerful witch or a mortal girl. The series also serves as a spinoff from the CW’s Riverdale, since the character belongs to Archie Comics, but no news of a crossover has been announced just yet. No matter, the series continues to receive praise from both critics and viewers and even has season 3 and 4 currently in the works. No release date has been announced yet for Chilling Adventures’ new seasons, but Hart refused to let the Halloween season happen without a visit from the original Sabrina.
During a visit to The Late Late Show with James Corden, Hart reprised her role as Sabrina Spellman for a new sketch. Corden plays Sabrina’s cousin from Washington DC who drops by to inform her that she has a new power. Now, Sabrina has the power to issue subpoenas to whomever she pleases. Unfortunately, they both quickly learn that maybe this new power isn’t as great as it may seem. Check out the full sketch below:
Hart has always been fond of her take on Sabrina from the 90s sitcom but has been indifferent to the new Netflix series. She’s explained before that the creation of the reboot made since, mainly because of Riverdale’s existence, and that the way they’re going about it is a smart way to reboot something. Switching up the tone from comedy to horror provides a fresh and exciting new take on the source material that definitely aided in its success. She’s also exclaimed that she wouldn’t mind appearing on the series as well, it would just depend on the character that was created for her.
Both Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Sabrina the Teenage Witch are perfect shows to watch for this Halloween season. Not only that, but they both go to show how strong the original source material is in that it can handle both comedy and horror. Though Chilling Adventures is far more fitting for a spooky night in this Halloween, Sabrina the Teenage Witch will always provide a good laugh while keeping the spirit of the season alive.
