Michael Keaton’s 1989 Batman suit is for sale. Given the storied history of DC’s Batman, it isn’t hard to think back on the wide variety of actors who have portrayed the legendary caped crusader on the big screen.
This being said, there was a time when Batman fans had no such luxury. The debate as to who portrayed the best cinematic version of the Dark Knight is a relatively new one, with Warner Bros. having kicked off what is today a massive franchise with Tim Burton’s 1989 adaptation, Batman. Michael Keaton was selected as the eponymous crime fighter and the film was a major blockbuster, with Jack Nicholson portraying a version of the Joker that is still regarded by many as one of the best depictions ever of that character. And although future big screen incarnations of Batman brought bigger and more successful versions of Gotham’s finest crime fighter to life, Keaton’s Batman remains a substantial success. In fact, there are still those who feel that despite the various actors who have taken on the role, Keaton’s Batman is still best.
For those who feel that way and have a little extra cash to spare, there’s some great news from Prop Store’s Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction. The London based mega-auction has announced via press release that it will be auctioning off Michael Keaton’s Batman suit from the hit 1989 film. The auction will take place on September 30thas well as October 1st, and Keaton’s suit is expected to bring in somewhere in the neighborhood of $98.5K – 148K.
What’s more, 2019 marks a dual anniversary for the iconic Batman character, as it’s now officially been 80 years since DC’s wildly successful superhero was brought to life, and it’s been 30 years since Burton’s Batman debuted in theatres. This incredible auction may not be a realistic consideration for most, but it’s still quite remarkable to think that one lucky person is going to walk away with one of the most important artifacts of the character’s legacy and long-running franchise. In addition to Keaton’s suit, the Prop Store auction will also have some other remarkable Batman props – not all of which are strictly from Burton’s 1989 film. An autographed Batarang from the 1966 Batman series will be available to bid on, as well as the rocket propelled grenade launcher used by the late Heath Ledger during his portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
All in all, it looks as though London’s due to host an amazing event with the Prop Store Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction. It might not be the most affordable event in the world, but the entire auction will offer over 900 different props and items of memorabilia, meaning that while a $98.5K Batman suit might not be all that practical either financially or logistically, there are sure to be many other smaller and perhaps more affordable items. Even if you can’t make it to the auction or have no cash to spare, it will be livestreamed starting September 30 from Prop Store’s website.
