Tom Cruise’s ascension back into being one of the world’s biggest movie stars over the past few years has been one to watch. At the center of that comeback is the Mission: Impossible franchise, which after releasing five installments already, is somehow not only still going but manages to only get better and better with each new film. That’s in no doubt, thanks to the work of talented filmmakers behind the camera either, with Brad Bird’s practical approach to Mission: Impossible 4 - Ghost Protocol and Christopher McQuarrie’s old school take on 2015’s Mission: Impossible 5 - Rogue Nation.
Right now, principal photography on the highly anticipated Mission: Impossible 6 has officially begun in Paris this week, with McQuarrie returning as the film’s director and writer. As of now, not much is known about the sixth installment, though Cruise and a number of the franchise’s recurring stars are expected to return, along with Rogue Nation breakout star, Rebecca Ferguson.
Just a few days into production, and some brand new set photos have arrived. Released by JustJared online, the images feature Cruise’s Ethan Hunt engaging in what looks to be a high-stakes car chase through the streets of Paris. Driving an old school BMW in the scene itself, it already looks like Mission: Impossible 6 is getting off to a quick start with its action sequences. Interestingly enough, the report that came with the set photos notes that actor Sean Harris was also involved in the film’s car chase, apparently riding in the passenger seat of Cruise’s car while wearing a straitjacket. What that means is that Mission: Impossible 6 will feature the return of Harris’ Lane from Rogue Nation in some form or another, which will likely come as a surprising bit of news for fans of the franchise, after Lane was last seen being taken into custody by Ethan and the authorities at the end of Rogue Nation. Whether or not Harris is returning for just a brief reappearance as the character or if he’ll play a much bigger role in the sequel will have to wait to be seen for the time being.
Waiting is the name of the game since McQuarrie and everyone involved in the film have been notably tight-lipped when it comes to revealing story details from the new film, which has left its main plot, antagonists, setting, and even how long after the events of Rogue Nation it takes place, shrouded in mystery. About all that is known about Mission: Impossible 6 right now are its main cast members, and that it’ll feature some more awe-inspiring, practical stunts for its audiences and critics to marvel at. It’ll be interesting to see how exactly Crusie and McQuarrie plan to top the previous film stunt-wise, considering Rogue Nation opened with a scene involving Cruise literally attached to the outside of a plane as it took off into the air.
