Godzilla: King of the Monsters crowned the iconic kaiju Gojira as the one and only king of the monsters in the MonsterVerse, but it seems he might be getting a new title going into next year’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Recently, director Michael Dougherty confirmed that Godzilla was always the “king of the monsters”, due to the fact that he had defeated the three-headed dragon Ghidorah in ancient Antarctica. But that title first appeared on TV screens at the end of Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla reboot in 2014.
Being the alpha predator in the MonsterVerse - the true king of the monsters - is the ultimate claim, and it’s one that will soon be challenged once again in Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020. In that film, which is also a follow-up to Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ 2017 movie, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla and Kong will fight each other for the first time in several years on the big screen. However, unlike other versus-type of movies, there will be one clear victor in the end.
Leading up to that film, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have been slowly updating the Monarch Sciences website, specifically to include information about events that took place - or creatures that appeared - in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. One of the biggest additions has been made to Godzilla himself since he now has a Monarch profile, which he didn’t prior to the film’s release. Based on his actions in the sequel movie, Monarch now refers to him as the “Ancient Guardian of the Natural World”.
Even though this may be a new type of identifier for Godzilla, Monarch still recognizes him as the “king of the monsters”, at least according to a portion of his cryptid profile on the Monarch Sciences website. But considering that the U.S. government attempted to kill Godzilla - though they were understandably trying to take down Rodan and Ghidorah at the same time - using the Oxygen Destroyer in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, it’s good to see that they’ve since switched sides. They now accept Dr. Serizawa’s stance on Godzilla being an ancient protector.
When Godzilla ultimately battles Kong in the upcoming MonsterVerse movie, they will be fighting for the title of “king of the monsters”. But no matter who wins, Godzilla will always be the world’s ancient protector (he’s saved the world at least three times already), while Kong will still be the king of Skull Island - a place he may soon have to leave in order to even come face to face with Gojira.
