Tyrese Gibson, one of the stars of Morbius star, has confirmed that the first trailer will drop on Monday. So far, Sony’s Spider-Man spinoffs have proven to be a huge success, with Venom grossing over $850 million worldwide and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse netting an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Next up is Morbius, by director Daniel Espinosa, starring Jared Leto as the so-called “Living Vampire.”
The last few days have seen reports that a trailer drop is imminent, with claims that it would release on January 13 at 6 AM PST. The trailer is said to run for around two-and-a-half minutes and is expected to be attached to Sony’s Bad Boys For Life, which releases this week. A single leaked image - showing Leto in makeup as Morbius - sparked strong reactions from Spider-Man fans.
Now, though, Tyrese Gibson - who plays the CIA agent Simon Stroud, a classic foe of Morbius - has confirmed on Instagram that the trailer will indeed be released tomorrow. Curiously, he’s included a video taken by a drone in which he shows off a flamethrower. Gibson doesn’t cite a precise time, but presumably the reports were accurate, and it will indeed drop at 6 AM PST (9AM EST, 2PM BST).
The flamethrower is a pretty odd touch, made even stranger by the fact Gibson has included it in the post’s tags. Marvel has a number of pyrokinetics, but Flamethrower is a pretty deep cut, hailing from an alternative universe. He’s also never been associated with Spider-Man, which means the studio shouldn’t really have his film rights at all. Indeed, his name doesn’t appear in the license agreement that was leaked as a result of the Sony hack in 2014. It’s possible that Gibson is instead simply making an oblique reference to some other pyrokinetic or fire-based individual, and interestingly a couple of these do indeed appear in Morbius comics. The most promising is the Demon-Fire Cult, a group of Satan worshipers who were led by a quasi-demon named Apocalypse (not the X-Men character). In the comics, Morbius became involved with the Demon-Fire Cult when his girlfriend was captured by them. The Demon-Fire Cult, its members, and even its leader Apocalypse are indeed named in the Sony licensing agreement, meaning they could potentially be used in Morbius.
It will be fascinating to get a proper first look at Morbius, the Living Vampire, and of course to see what relevance the flamethrower has to all this. If Morbius performs well, then Sony will have proved that the box office performance of Venom wasn’t an exception for their live-action spinoffs. Their own shared cinematic universe will be taking shape.
