One of the co-creators of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon, recently spoke up about wanting to see the likes of Scorpion or Sub-Zero joining the roster of Super Smash Bros Ultimate – stating that it would feel like a personal stamp of approval for his fighting game series. Fans of Nintendo’s crossover fight title the world over are always anticipating news of the next gaming character that’ll be joining the fray. This holds especially true after Nintendo pulled the curtain back on Smash Ultimate’s Fighter Pass Vol. 2, which will introduce an additional six characters to the game.
There was a sense of genuine disappointment emanating from the Smash fan base after Fire Emblem: Three House’s Byleth was confirmed as the final combatant of the first Fighters Pass. Gamers had high hopes but were ultimately let down by the addition of the game’s eighth playable Fire Emblem character. While that addition didn’t land, gamers remain optimistic about the future of Ultimate’s DLC.
A number of Smash fans are hoping to see some of gaming’s biggest icons make the crossover into Ultimate, and it turns out that Mortal Kombat co-creator/creative director Ed Boon has his own hopes as well. Speaking with ShackNews during the DICE Awards, Boon was asked about how he’d feel if the likes of Scorpion or Sub-Zero were added to Smash Ultimate. While unable to speak to the opinion of Warner Bros. Interactive, Boon did state that seeing such a crossover would be validating – referencing the act as a “stamp of approval” for Mortal Kombat.
There are a number of discussions that presumably go into including a character in Smash Bros. Generally speaking, Mortal Kombat has more than earned a spot on the Smash roster alongside the latest title’s growing pantheon of playable gaming idols. The only thing that may hold a character from the series back is the fact that MK is a notoriously violent game, but even that hasn’t stopped M-rated characters like Bayonetta from joining the fray in the past.
“For me personally (I can’t speak for all of Warner Bros or anything), that would be kind of like a stamp of approval. It’d be like being part of the gang and all that stuff. I would love to see that.”
With other fan-favorite characters like Kingdom Hearts’ Sora and Crash Bandicoot still in contention, it’s almost impossible to tell if Scorpion or Sub-Zero have a shot at joining the fray. With the official Halo Twitter account teasing Master Chief’s inclusion in Smash, however, it’s safe to say that nothing is impossible.
